March 20, 1956: Calling it a new era in offshore exploration, R.G. LeTourneau christened the “Scorpion,” Zapata OffShore Co.’s mobile offshore drilling platform. It was designed and built by R.G. LeTourneau Inc. for Zapata, the Houston company started by a group of oilmen that included George H.W. Bush.
